Interesting facts of Automobiles: Nomenclature

The nomenclature of automobiles is very interesting . They are generally named after the name of an individual, a city, a bird, constitutional word, and others. for Example :
  • Vespa in Italian means wasp, a brown-yellow , bee-like flying insect, whose sting is as sharp as that of a bee. The Vespa scooter is so named because its rear humps are shaped like the wings of a wasp and its pick-up is as sharp as the sting of a wasp.
  • Bajaj Scooter is named after Jamnalal Bajaj, the pioneer of scooter industry in India.
  • Tata truck and other Tata vehicles are named in the honour of Sir Jamshed Ji Tata.
  • Daimler , Mercedes, and Benz cars' have been named after Daimler( the inventor of first I.C. Engine driven automotive), his wife Mercedes and his daughter Benz.
  • Lovebird , an electricity driven car is named after a bird.
  • Ambassador car resembles a constitutional word. This car  was named so when Birlas decided to customize the Oxford Morris (UK) fro India, back in 1940.
  • Harley Davidson motorcycle, the first motorcycle made in 1903 is named after its producers Harley Davidson brothers of U.S.A.. It is knows as world's foremost motorcycle.
  • The moped named "Toro Jazz' means 'style of a bull'. In Spanish, Toro means 'a bull' and Jazz means "style".
  • "Rolls-Royce" cars are name after Charles Stewart Rolls (a baron) and Frederick Henry Royce ( a self-taught engineer) whose association gave birth to this world famous car. They , in 1904 , brought up a company named Rolls-Royce Ltd., which created cars that became the symbol of aristocracy.
  • Limousines have been named after the name of an old French province called "Limousine".
  • Coupe is named after the French term "Cut-off-Coach".
  • The SLK 200 and 230 models are the convertible Mercedes-Benz cars. Here SLK stands for Sportlich ,Leicht Kurz -the German word for sporty , light and short.
